S.E.Hinton was in high school in 1967 when she wrote the book The Outsiders.  She was 15 when she started writing the novel and she was 18 when the book was published. S.E. Hinton wrote The Outsiders based on a real story from her life and she was actually friends with greasers when she was in high school. The greasers she was friends with really enjoyed the book which was her quote biggest compliment on the book.

S. E. Hinton has received numerous honors and awards. She won the Margaret Alexander Edwards Award in 1988. This award honors authors “whose book or books, over a period of time, have been accepted by young people as an authentic voice that continues to illuminate their experiences and emotions, giving insight into their lives.” After this, her book the outsiders received multiple awards. This ending in people wanting this book to become a movie which it did.

Movie: The movie The Outsiders was produced and released in 1983. This movie was started by a really famous actor which also gave the movie so much popularity. Such as stars like Ralph Macchio who played Johnny in the movie but was also known for his main role as the original “Karate Kid”. Another famous actor that stared in the outsiders is Patrick Swayze who played Darry in the outsiders but is known for his role in the movies “Dirty Dancing” and “Ghost”. There were a lot of actors in this movie that was well known and famous. For example, another one being Rob Lowe who played Soda pop but was known for his role in “The Christmas Shoes” and “St. Elmo’s fire”.

Even though the movie had good actors it was also popular for how good the storyline was played out and showed what those kids back then had to go through especially if they were in a gang.  S.E. Hinton said in an article once about the book “Nobody changed a word I wrote. They asked me to cut descriptions once in a while. They corrected my spelling, thank god. And [they gave] the most helpful editorial comments I’d ever had, or have ever had since.” this was in the EW’s 50th-anniversary article. IN this article she talks about how she loved how the producers of the movie didn’t try and change where words and story from the book but they helped her when it came to how things were worded and showed throughout the movie.

Overall, the book and the movie were very good and popular they both bring their own meaning to the storyline, and which one you read or watch you will be gaining lessons and get to experience through pictures or detail of what the story was about. S.E. Hinton has also released multiple other books but the one that is most common to the outsiders and is a really good read is “That was then, This is now”. The Outsiders is a really good book to read and a movie to watch especially for teens and young adults.
